Canopy by Hilton is a new, 20-story hotel located in downtown Clayton, a city within the St. Louis metropolitan area. Selected to develop programming and design of the building core and shell, LJC worked with the client to create a project that will help re-invigorate the urban core while providing a unique brand experience for hotel guests. Located on a prominent but underutilized 1-acre site within the center of the downtown district, the design team focused on activating the public spaces surrounding the hotel to help draw in visitors beyond those staying in the hotel.
The proposed development concedes a swath of its ground floor footprint to widen the sidewalk by 18″ along the north edge of the building, providing opportunities for a more vibrant streetscape and helping balance the hotel’s height at the street level. Integrating art as a component of the building design, murals on the east-facing alley wall and south garage façade will also activate the pedestrian experience. Approximately 4,600 SF has been designed for a new entertainment space featuring a jazz club on the entry level. A lounge and 3,900 SF outdoor terrace on the 7th level will further allow public engagement. Additional amenity spaces for hotel guests include a restaurant & bar, business center, ballroom, and fitness center.
The composition of the building has been thoughtfully chosen and purposefully incorporated to break down the scale of the building, providing a fit within the context of the existing architecture of downtown Clayton. The energy-efficient glazing system creates a pattern exuding a sense of movement during the day. The project is currently tracking LEED Silver certification. Construction is anticipated to commence in the fall of 2024.
