The Sunnen Station Apartment project capitalizes on the current revitalization in the historic suburb of St. Louis, MO. The initial scope called for a single multi-family apartment building, which proved so successful a second building was added to the project. LJC designed Phase I and II each as four-level, wood-framed buildings on the five-and-a-half-acre site, oriented across an active plaza from a metro light rail station.
The team designed both buildings with a dynamic form that responds to the adjacent streets, topography, and the light rail station. The buildings’ programs include market-rate units organized around central courtyards that integrate amenities including a pool, pool house, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, and a sustainable landscape for each independent building. The highly-efficient buildings are comprises of one- and two-bedroom units with large exterior balconies. The interior amenities include club rooms, lounges, gyms, and on-floor storage. The exterior building materials include brick masonry, cement board siding, and glass.
Centrally located club rooms give direct access to the pool grounds and provide social space for games and lounging. Colorful and movable furniture encourage residents to gather and connect to the amenities and features cozy upholstered booth spaces and a billiards tables. The spaces are also dual use for events and gatherings, with large club kitchens and lounge areas directly adjacent to the dual-sided fireplace to the outside lounge and game area.
