MLK Corridor Plan

The MLK Cultural Boulevard plan turns community-led ideas into a clear, realistic roadmap for action—supporting both immediate improvements and long-term transformation. The goal was to create a character plan that reflects shared identity, introduces new public spaces, and enhances the corridor through better transit, green infrastructure, and public art.

At its heart, the initiative is about restoring dignity and empowering residents to shape their future. It recognized the long history of disinvestment and exclusion in the community—and worked to change that by putting decision-making power in the hands of local people. Through a collective impact model focused on meaningful engagement and long-term stewardship, the process allowed residents to lead and define their own narrative.

To support inclusive participation, the planning team hosted hands-on charrettes & workshops, pop-up events, and created digital tools like a website and animated videos. A storefront on the boulevard became a welcoming hub where neighbors could learn, share feedback, and help shape the plan.

Midway through the effort, an EF3 tornado struck the area on May 16, 2025—an event that made the work even more urgent. What began as a planning process quickly became a movement for recovery and resilience, reinforcing the need for community leadership in rebuilding efforts.

The plan also includes a flexible implementation strategy and a governance structure independent of any single organization or funding source. These tools give the community the influence and stability it needs to guide future land use decisions—ensuring the corridor’s evolution reflects local vision, values, and priorities.
