Lake Calumet Bike Network Study

Lake Calumet Bike Network Study Rendering Stony Island Avenue, Doty Avenue and 103rd Street

This study will advance active transportation improvements considered by Cook County and municipal staff (including the City of Chicago Department of Transportation). Specifically, this effort will evaluate, plan, and identify opportunities to create a more connected bikeway network through enhancements to existing and future (planned) on- and off-street facilities.

To overcome any existing physical barriers to walking or rolling, this study will focus on a series of viable recommendations, such as the potential for additional bike lanes, off-street trails, and shared streets to create a complete bike network that promotes safe, comfortable, accessible, connected, and equitable biking opportunities to major community destinations (e.g., train stations, secondary schools and colleges, and open spaces).  Connections will be made all around (and through) Lake Calumet to allow cyclists to travel safely between the many neighborhoods and suburban communities surrounding Lake Calumet and access existing and planned regional bike trails to connect with other neighborhoods beyond the study area.

The study will prioritize various segments based on ease of construction, consistency with other planning efforts, and availability of funds, and will propose an overall buildout of the complete network within the next 10 to 15 years.
