Chicago Avenue Improvement Plan

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) conducted a corridor improvement project along Chicago Avenue from Austin Boulevard to Cicero Avenue. Inspired by the visionary ‘Soul City Corridor Development Framework Plan’ and the collaborative ‘Austin Forward’ initiative, this ambitious project aims to revitalize, connect, and energize the neighborhoods along Chicago Avenue.

The mission was clear: to create a safe, walkable, and visually appealing street that supports economic growth and fosters a sense of community. By reactivating the neighborhood cores, historically beloved focal points for pedestrian activity, shopping, services, transportation, public spaces, and quality-of-life amenities, we aim to bring back the vitality that residents and businesses deserve.

To ensure the Plan’s success and relevance, engaging residents, businesses, and property owners was vital. The team went beyond the norm, reaching out to those who may have previously felt excluded or unheard. Our thoughtful public engagement plan incorporated creative and meaningful methods to gather authentic community input. We firmly believe that the success of the planning process hinges on the ownership and accessibility that community members feel.

These four principles were used to guide our engagement process that focuses on empowerment and exchange:
