The Standard at Columbia
Columbia, SC
Located at the corner of Park Street and Regent Street in Madison, WI, this privately owned and operated student residence serves upperclassmen at the University of Wisconsin and is an integral part of the historic Greenbush neighborhood. Designed by LJC, the building fosters community connections while paying homage to the neighborhood’s rich history. On the east side, a plaza links to East Campus Mall, featuring pedestrian paths and artwork that highlight the heritage of Greenbush. The west side opens to a lively streetscape with a café, trees, and landscaping that enhance the vibrant atmosphere at the Park and Regent intersection.
The design incorporates setbacks at levels five and nine to respect neighborhood planning guidelines and to create a smooth transition to surrounding buildings. The building offers a variety of living options, from studios to five-bedroom apartments, with modern amenities, including a rooftop deck for residents.
A key design challenge was fitting the required number of units on an irregularly shaped site, which was resolved by cantilevering parts of the building over a service drive and breaking up the massing into distinct volumes. High-quality materials, such as terracotta-colored and dark gray masonry, provide both durability and aesthetic appeal, while deep-set windows create visual interest. The ground floor serves as a vibrant social concourse, with communal spaces that support interaction and study, further integrating the building into the fabric of the campus and neighborhood. This development stands as one of Madison’s most refined student housing projects.
