This project reimagines an underutilized campus building as a state-of-the-art childcare facility to serve BJC employees and their families. LJC led the architectural, landscape, and interior design efforts, aligning the project with the client’s mission to provide world-class teaching and learning facilities.  By prioritizing natural light, safety, and functionality, the design meets and exceeds Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MODESE) requirements while addressing the unique needs of children and staff.

Architectural improvements include a welcoming new entrance, updated classrooms, and functional skylights to flood interior spaces with daylight. For interiors, neutral finishes and tunable lighting create a nurturing environment. Centralized playrooms and a library serve as hubs of connection, while thoughtful placement of support spaces ensures efficiency and flexibility.

The landscape design features an engaging playground with toddler and preschooler zones, incorporating sensory elements, age-appropriate equipment, and safety features. Shaded areas, synthetic turf, and native plantings provide durability and biodiversity, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The project tackles significant challenges, including adapting to the existing building’s uneven floors and meeting stringent plumbing requirements for potty training and staff efficiency. LJC worked closely with stakeholders to implement creative solutions, such as localized safe zones and optimized storage spaces, ensuring the facility supports holistic well-being.

This project exemplifies a commitment to children’s development and staff comfort, balancing regulatory compliance with thoughtful design that inspires learning, safety, and community.
