St. Louis County Library’s original headquarters had served the 20-branch district for over 60 years, but the growing demands on its services required an evolution. LJC’s design team conducted a thorough analysis of the site and building, ultimately recommending a separation of functions into two new structures: the administrative and branch library buildings. This strategic decision not only addresses current needs but ensures that the County’s library system will continue to thrive for the next 60 years.
Modern libraries are vibrant community hubs, and the new design reflects that transformation. The St. Louis County Library District (SLCL) houses a collection of over 3 million items, supporting hands-on learning, creativity, and exploration. With patrons regularly checking out everything from sewing machines and craft kits to musical instruments and Chromebooks, the library’s design needed to be flexible and future-proofed to accommodate the evolving needs of its users.
The Clark Family Branch was thoughtfully placed on an 8-acre site with careful attention to safety and outdoor event planning. The building’s location incorporates inviting outdoor spaces such as a reading garden and balcony, providing patrons with fresh air and natural light.
Drawing inspiration from the district’s 19 other branches, the new building is an elegant blend of stone, glass, and steel—creating a modern yet timeless structure that will serve as a heart of the community. Inside, flexible spaces accommodate diverse activities, from intimate study nooks to vibrant, open areas, ensuring a welcoming environment for all patrons for years to come.
