Sports Illustrated – Tuscaloosa

Travel + Leisure Company, the world’s leading membership and leisure travel operation, is introducing an innovative concept for sports-themed resort and lifestyle complexes in vibrant college towns. In Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, the company is launching a two-phase hospitality and entertainment complex along the scenic north shore of the Black Warrior River.

The first phase will feature multiple buildings with timeshare units, private condos, restaurants, single-story retail, a central services building, parking, and outdoor amenities. Phase two will add four more buildings with timeshare units, condos, and additional outdoor amenities and parking.

Inspired by Tuscaloosa’s architectural character, the design embraces the area’s natural beauty, with building heights kept below the surrounding tree canopy. Lighting will be designed to reduce glare and light pollution, while landscaping will use native plant species to seamlessly blend with the environment. Architectural materials, including red brick, painted metal accents, and colored concrete, reflect the historic aesthetics of the University of Alabama. Retail spaces will feature aluminum-framed glazing that complements the overall design.

This development will serve as a bridge between the university and community, creating a public entertainment district with riverfront access and a large lawn for events. The project aligns with Tuscaloosa’s Riverwalk Vision, connecting parks and local amenities while enhancing recreational opportunities with outdoor trails that preserve the local tree canopy.

Tuscaloosa will join a network of college-sports-focused resorts, providing Crimson Tide fans a new space to celebrate their team’s legacy.
