The Harris-Stowe State University STEM Academic Building is a future-ready hub for learning, research, and collaboration that advances the University’s mission to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Designed to support evolving pedagogies and research methodologies, the facility embraces a “long life, loose fit” approach—providing adaptable spaces that remain relevant as academic needs and technologies change over time.

At the heart of the building is a vibrant, transparent circulation core that brings learning on display and fosters connection across disciplines. Laboratories, classrooms, collaboration spaces, and student amenities are organized to encourage interaction, discovery, and community, reinforcing a student-centered academic experience. Indoor and outdoor spaces are seamlessly integrated, creating welcoming “porches” and gathering areas that strengthen connections to the campus quad and surrounding neighborhood.

Rooted in the historical context of the former Mill Creek Valley, the project acknowledges the site’s past while contributing to the ongoing repair of the urban fabric. The building completes the southwest edge of the campus quadrangle, serving as a new academic landmark and a gateway between Harris-Stowe State University and Midtown St. Louis. Thoughtful site design anticipates future campus growth and strengthens pedestrian connections, including alignment with the future Brickline Greenway.

Developed through close collaboration with the University, consultants, and construction partners, the HSSU STEM Academic Building reflects a shared commitment to flexibility, sustainability, and innovation—supporting students, faculty, and the broader community for generations to come.
