Biopharmaceutical company Horizon Therapeutics is relocating its U.S. headquarters operations to a 70-acre, 3-building campus in Deerfield, IL.
In January 2020, biopharmaceutical company Horizon Therapeutics hired Lamar Johnson Collaborative (LJC) to complete the renovation of its newly purchased office campus in Deerfield, IL, where it will relocate its U.S. headquarters operations. Situated on 70-acres, the 3-building campus will be home to over 500 employees and have the flexibility to accommodate anticipated long-term growth.
Horizon challenged LJC to fully imagine and change their way of conducting training and collaborative team meetings to enhance their ability to gather for all staff sessions centrally. The collaborative planning and design process has addressed Horizon’s business and operational challenges, but further embraced the continued development of Horizon’s brand. As a pharmaceutical company that operates in a biotech world, LJC is creating a sense of place that fosters Horizon’s employee community allowing continued training and education with the opportunity to break away from the business workday to gather in communal zones and respectfully engage with one another.
With a recent rebranding, Horizon’s new space aims to express its new brand and celebrate patient care. Providing its employees with the best and most advanced environment to succeed in will allow Horizon’s patients to receive the best possible care. The state-of-the-art facility will be full of engaging amenities to help attract talent and position it as one of the best places to work. The workplace program LJC is working on will accommodate Horizon’s 500+ employees with brand new state-of-the-art furnishings and technology. Building amenities will include a Starbucks coffee shop, full-service cafeteria, work café, tech pub, snack pantries on each floor, multipurpose training center, fitness center, game lounge, golf simulators, and an outdoor landscaped terrace.
The renovation includes 450,000 SF of space all within a remarkably tight schedule: from start to finish, the renovation will take just ten months. Capitalizing on technology by presenting multiple life fly-throughs using LJC’s BIM model in real-time while documenting for construction rather than formal paper and slide presentations has had a significant impact on meeting this quick turnaround goal. Generating live flythrough models allowed Horizon to see every square inch of LJC’s design and walk away with a full contextual understanding of the team’s design thinking. LJC also played off of its experience working with Horizon on its former Lake Forest U.S. headquarters and Dublin, Ireland global headquarters. This existing client knowledge and ability to listen to and adapt to every required program change has been crucial in keeping the project on track to meet a record-breaking schedule.
Another challenge has been repositioning the existing architecture from its elaborate design for public spaces that lacked the human comfort factor desired for typical workplace floors. The design team had to break down as many barriers to the sterile design to make the environment healthy and exciting. Natural light was encouraged, free-formed architecture brings in energy, and plant life is sprinkled throughout to keep the human connection to nature.
Kicking off in January 2020, LJC’s design team has been strategically and rapidly working with Horizon to ensure its new U.S. headquarters will be the perfect reflection of its brand, incorporating the top amenities for its employees, and allowing flexible space for future growth.
