SIUE Health Sciences Building | LJC Design & Engineering

The new Health Science Complex (HSC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) gives healthcare students a place to train the way they’ll actually work. At approximately 215,000 SF, it’s among the largest buildings on SIUE’s campus, with an entire floor built as a fully functioning mock hospital — a training ground built down to the smallest detail. HSC is a LEED Silver® project, reflecting SIUE’s commitment to sustainable, responsible campus growth.

Home to the School of Pharmacy, the School of Nursing, and related programs, the HSC is built around advanced simulation suites, dedicated research labs, and clinical skills spaces that mirror real-world care settings. Students get hands-on experience with the tools and technology they’ll rely on throughout their careers, backed by faculty offices, modern classrooms, and student resource and study spaces.

Central to the design is a commitment to interdisciplinary and interprofessional education. By creating spaces where students across health professions learn and collaborate side by side, LJC and Clayco helped shape an environment that reflects the collaborative nature of modern healthcare — equipping graduates with the skills to meet the region’s and state’s growing healthcare needs.

Delivered through a Design Build joint venture between Clayco and Poettker, this project brought together the expertise of leading industry partners to create a state of the art healthcare education facility. CannonDesign served as the Design Architect while LJC provided Architect of Record services, technical advisory, and programming, planning, and design for all nursing clinical and laboratory spaces, helping deliver an innovative environment that supports the next generation of healthcare professionals.
