A clear and compassionate mission drove the plaza renovation project: to transform an inhospitable space into a welcoming, functional, and dignified environment for unhoused individuals as well as employees serving this community. The design goals centered on improving wayfinding, introducing shade and seating, and enhancing the overall quality of the plaza to promote relief and comfort for visitors. The design incorporates intuitive pathways, ensuring clarity and accessibility for users with a wide range of mobility abilities and personal belongings.
Faced with a limited budget and a highly sensitive user group, the team embraced a design-build approach, leveraging the client’s partnerships to incorporate donated and discounted elements, such as a cooling pavilion, while preserving as many mature trees as possible to maintain shade and sustainability. Through close collaboration and deep client insight, the design prioritizes dignity, accessibility, and respect—hallmarks of inclusive public space. Early feedback confirms the success of this transformation, with stakeholders praising its functionality, beauty, and meaningful impact on the community.
