University Of Chicago Center For Care And Discovery Parking Garage
Chicago, IL
LJC is designing a mixed-use logistical hub and parking garage to serve the new Indiana University Health downtown hospital and expanded medical campus. The South Support Building (SSB) will contain a 22-bay loading dock and logistics hub, a 2,600 car parking garage, office, retail space, and bulk medical gas storage in an exterior service yard.
The LJC team engaged with IU Health and various campus consulting partners and stakeholders in an exploration of program distribution and building orientation and configuration seeking to leverage the SSB to its best use as a vital logistical and parking asset for the new campus expansion.
Maximizing the building footprint for above-grade parking efficiency and below-grade logistical support space was a key driver in the development of the final design. Orientation of parking bays allows for six total bays of parking, shortening pedestrian travel distances to the main elevator core, and a reduced the number of levels required to meet the parking demand. Tunnels provide linkages to medical center buildings for utility and materials management connections and a bridge link provides convenient access to the new hospital for patients, visitors, and staff.
