Katherine Ward Burg Garden
St. Louis, MO
LJC designed a new columbarium shade structure for Wildwood Valley Gardens at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, envisioning a fresh, contemporary form that echoes the silhouette of tree branches and foliage, casting dappled patterns of light across the ground while integrating seamlessly with the character of the surrounding gardens. Rooted in Bellefontaine’s designation as a Level IV Arboretum. The concept draws on the timeless symbolism of trees: roots honoring those who came before, branches reaching toward the future, and cycles that embody both remembrance and renewal.
The design preserves the columbarium’s existing niches and surrounding stone wall while introducing stone-clad, elevated scattering gardens that expand opportunities for memorialization and strengthen the garden’s role as a place of peace and connection. Sustainable design strategies, including native plantings, high-albedo stone, and a metal shade structure, further enhance harmony with the landscape while reducing environmental impact.
The result is a serene and contemporary sanctuary, both grounding and ethereal, that welcomes visitors with dignity, nurtures personal and collective remembrance, and deepens the timeless bond between memory and nature.
