Mixed-use vision activates iconic Morton Salt site

Along the North Branch of the Chicago River, Morton Salt has stood as a familiar welcome sign to the city for nearly 100 years. Its location adjacent to Goose Island, high visibility and rich history intrigued developer R^2 to re-invent the site with creative offices and retail development while maintaining its iconic character and history. The design and preservation of the building by LJC embraces the original architectural design by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, architects of some of Chicago’s most prominent architecture from the early 20th century including the infamous Chicago Post Office and the Merchandise Mart. LJC acknowledges the buildings’ prior use as a packaging, storage and shipping center for salt, restoring originally designed openings and adding new apertures to help activate the site and surroundings. The grit and industrial nature of the site are reflected both in the building and the landscape.

Rich history, prominent location and river access situate this development as a unique player in the Chicago market.

Omni Workshop has designed the 30’ required setback along the Chicago River to include a landscaped walking path to view the riverfront and surrounding city. The design consists of excellent views of downtown Chicago and incorporates stormwater retention using innovative stormwater soils to help alleviate combined sewer overflow.
