SCAD ATLANTA CAMPUS

Partnering with Mackey Mitchell Architects and SCAD Design Group, the team is bringing to life SCAD's vision for a new campus through landscape architecture.

New residential and mixed-use projects provide an opportune moment for the university to create and connect students to new outdoor amenity spaces, residencies, classrooms and enrich the student life experience at SCAD.

The catalyst is the new SCAD Forty Student Housing development featuring a high-rise residential tower and event space nestled into a challenging site on campus. Built into a steep slope, the building takes advantage of the grade change to organize the internal program of the building as it relates directly to the site. Several garden terraces surround the building and step up the slope, providing various outdoor spaces for students to gather and enjoy both active and passive places of interaction. The building plays an important role in developing the overall campus by optimizing this previously underutilized site. Acting as the mid-campus link between Spring House and SCAD Fash, the building’s new entry plaza doubles as a drop-off and event plaza while creating a new active space on campus for markets, food trucks, and performances.

The second phase of development is the mixed-use SCAD Spring Street that embraces the popular Midtown Atlanta thoroughfare with a multi-towered student housing, dining, theater, store, and parking garage. This development fronts Spring Street with an urban landscape, blending seamlessly into the neighborhood standards. In the central courtyard, the excitement of an urban campus spills out into an ultra-flexible campus space. A sloped lawn serves as a large event space and a seating lawn for outdoor movies broadcast on the sizeable building-mounted screen. Café tables, integrated seat walls, and even hammock loungers provide a diverse mix of seating and gathering spaces for students to pass the time between classes or gather with friends. A rooftop amenity deck offers a luxury-like pool experience for residents that speaks to the broader SCAD development through material palette and design aesthetic.

Together the SCAD Forty, Spring Street, and SCAD Way developments create a rich and unique campus experience and environment in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, offering diverse campus amenities in a vibrant urban context.
