CITY OF JOPLIN SR. CENTER
A city rebuilds for seniors following a 2011 tornado.
The Joplin Senior Center is located on the site once occupied by a hospital razed after a devastating tornado hit the city in 2011. In rebuilding, the city sought to provide an accessible facility offering nutrition, wellness and resources for its senior adult community.
A massive, stone wall is the architectural entry and spine of the building symbolizing the strength and resiliency of the community of Joplin. Layered behind the stone wall is the exposed structural skeleton, drawing the eye westward toward Mercy Park, a dedicated memorial to the 2011 event.
Nutrition services and recreation opportunities are supported by a dining hall and billiards lounge, each of which incorporates views of the nearby park. Emphasizing the importance of safe space, the facility includes an exercise room that doubles as a FEMA ICC 500-rated storm shelter.
