175 W JACKSON ROOFTOP TERRACE
An exclusive rooftop amenity deck for office tenants offers flexible space to work, play, and relax with incredible city views.
As part of a larger project to redesign and renovate 175 W Jackson’s lobby and tenant amenity center, LJC’s landscape team designed a 4,000 SF rooftop terrace on the building’s 22nd floor. Adjacent to the penthouse amenity floor, the rooftop area allows tenants access to a striking outdoor rooftop experience with incredible views of Chicago and the nearby Willis Tower.
Long and rectangular, the rooftop is adaptable for different tenant uses with ample café seating for outdoor lunches, informal gathering areas with sectional seating and rocking Adirondack chairs, large tables for work meetings, and high-top tables for evening events. The synthetic turf offers a more active and playful space for bag toss and ping pong.
Built in 1912, 175 W Jackson, also known as the old Insurance Exchange building, is an architectural masterpiece. Supporting large amounts of weight and people on the roof was not part of the original plan, so the amenity deck posed structural challenges to accommodate and support the new heavier weight of deep soil profiles, trees and shrubs, and pavers.
Planters placed at each column along the intricate parapet create smaller rooms accented with different plant mixes as you move through each area. Bold plantings and bright blue, green, red, and yellow accent furniture add splashes of color throughout the space year-round. Festoon lights strung over one end of the deck add the finishing touch along with LED light strips flush-mounted in between the metal planks to break up the monotony of the metal while adding warmth and ambiance.
Completed in Spring 2020, this is one of the city’s newest unique rooftop amenity decks that will be enjoyed by current and future tenants and a feature selling point as Brookfield attracts new tenants to 175 W Jackson.
